Congratulations!

Introduction
The President has selected you to be a Washington DC tour guide for the summer.  This is a very prestigious honor.   You and your group must become experts on a Washington D.C. landmark by researching that landmark and writing an essay to present back to the President for his approval.  The President has full confidence in your work so don't let him down!   Listed below are steps to help you complete your task!  


Task
You will work as a team and choose an important landmark to research in our Nation's capital, Washington D.C.  You will then write an essay sharing important and interesting facts and information about your landmark.  You will present your essay along with a video to your classmates during computer lab. 


Instructions to Download a file

  1.  Click on Download File below labeled  dc_tour_research_doc.docx
  2. When Microsoft Word box appears click OK
  3. Type your Name at the top and type your monument name in the box provided
  4. Remember to Save document to your H:Drive

Process
ROLE #1

Step 1 Research the history of and facts about the building itself.

For example...

  • when it was built/rebuilt/renovated (started and finished)
  • who designed it
  • how much it cost to build
  • sizes (length, width, height, etc.)
  • materials
  • where it is located in relationship to Washington, D.C.
  • what distinguishing characteristics does it have (statues, columns, stairs, etc.)
  • come up with some of your own ideas


Step 2 Write a descriptive paragraph from the information you have found.

  • You may use a graphic organizer to help organize your thoughts.
  • You must have a catchy topic sentence.
  • All detail sentences must have an adjective.
  • Use examples to support each detail sentence.
  • You must come up with an exciting clincher sentence that summarizes your paragraph.
  • Have someone in your team edit and check your essay.
  • Have essay approved by Mrs. Rhew or your teacher.
  • Use Microsoft Word to type your essay on the computer.

Step 3 Help your team create a video with pictures you have saved on your H:Drive of your landmark using Animoto.



ROLE #2

Step 1 Research interesting and unusual facts about the building.

Think about facts that are...

  • funny
  • odd
  • different
  • amazing
  • unusual
  • come up with some of your own ideas
 

Step 2 Write a descriptive paragraph from the information you have found.

  • You may use a graphic organizer to help organize your thoughts.
  • You must have a catchy topic sentence.
  • All detail sentences must have an adjective.
  • Use examples to support each detail sentence.

ROLE #3


Step 1 Research the history of the person being honored if you are researching a memorial or monument. Here are some ideas:

  • who it honors
  • what was special about this person
  • why was a building built in honor of this person
  • find out a little about their life
  • when did this person live
  • come up with some of your own interesting ideas

OR Research the reason the building was built and what it is used for if you are researching a government building.

Things to think about...

  • What happens there?
  • Do people live there? Who?
  • Do people work there? Who?
  • Does anything else happen there?
  • What branch of the government do people in this building work for?
